EmPowerED LogoDistrict 197’s comprehensive technology plan, called “EmPowerED”, is an ongoing, multi-year program that is integrating technology into classrooms district-wide and allowing all teachers to personalize learning, incorporate relevant and current online educational resources into their lessons, facilitate electronic assessments that provide immediate feedback regarding academic progress and more.

The plan has three parts; provide high-quality professional development for staff, transform curriculum and instruction, and implement devices for students. Since the launch of EmPowerED in 2015, the timeline and approach in these areas has varied based on the needs of each school and grade level. The goal is to continue with that philosophy as EmPowerED is implemented into the district’s elementary schools.

For example, each classroom in grades K-2 will have an iPad cart that has one device for every two students. In grades 3 and 4, just like in years past, there will be a set of iPads in every classroom so that each student has access to one. At the beginning of the year iPads will only be used at school, however, students in grades 3 and 4 may periodically bring home a device to complete assignments later in the year.

Though there is a new focus on technology, this does not mean that all class content will be digital or that students will use a device throughout their entire day. Technology will be used when appropriate and teachers will continue to use traditional instructional methods and ask students to complete assignments or projects using tools other than an iPad.

During Pilot Knob's Back-to-School night on August 31 there will be sessions for third and fourth grade families that will provide more information regarding EmPowerED to answer questions and cover topics such as proper care and handling of the iPad, safety and expectations for appropriate use of the device. Sessions will run every thirty minutes, starting at 3:30 p.m. Please attend the session that works for your family. Students should attend with their parents/guardians.
